The One Placed Light in You on Purpose

ay sareeraa mayri-aa har tum meh jot rakhee taa too jag meh aa-i-aa.
O my body, the Lord infused His Light into you, and then you came into the world.
har jot rakhee tuDh vich taa too jag meh aa-i-aa.
The Lord infused His Light into you, and then you came into the world.
har aapay maataa aapay pitaa jin jee-o upaa-ay jagat dikhaa-i-aa.
The Lord Himself is your mother, and He Himself is your father; He created the created beings, and revealed the world to them.
gur parsaadee bujhi-aa taa chalat ho-aa chalat nadree aa-i-aa.
By Guru's Grace, some understand, and then it's a show; it seems like just a show.

Says Nanak, He laid the foundation of the Universe, and infused His Light, and then you came into the world. ||33||

In plain words

O my body, the One placed Light inside you, and then you came into the world.

The One placed Light inside you, and then you came into the world.

The One is your mother, and the One is your father. The One made every living being and showed them the world.

By the Guru's grace some understand, and then it is all a play — a wonder to watch.

Nanak says: the One laid the root of the whole universe and placed Light inside you, and then you came into the world.

You came into the world because the One placed Light inside you.
The deeper layer

Ay sareeraa mayri-aa har tum meh jot rakhee taa too jag meh aa-i-aa — "O my body, the Lord placed His Light in you; THEN you came into the world." Now the body itself is spoken to (the first of two sareeraa-verses, with the eyes and ears to follow), and the theology of embodiment is stated with unusual precision: the Light is not added to a body that already existed; the placing of the jot is the condition of arrival. Bodies are what the Light does when it wants a world. This grounds verse 6's claim (the body without love is a poor instrument) in its deepest root: the instrument was built around a spark.

Har aapay maataa aapay pitaa — the One is Himself mother, Himself father. Gurbani uses this formula often, and it does double work: intimately (the child's total dependence and total belonging) and metaphysically (the One as both material and efficient cause — womb and seed, substance and design). Then the seeing: gur parsaadee bujhi-aa taa chalat ho-aa chalat nadree aa-i-aa — by grace one understands, and then the chalat — the play, the marvel — is seen AS play. (The literal translation's 'it's a show; it seems like just a show' can read dismissively in English; chalat is closer to 'wondrous play' than to 'mere show' — the seeing is delighted, not deflating.)

The closing line rises to how everything began: sarisat kaa mool rachi-aa — He laid the root of the universe — and the same act, at your scale, placed Light in you. Your birth and the world's birth are one gesture at two magnifications.

A Question to Sit With

If your body is a lamp for a Light that was placed inside it, what makes your light easier for others to see?
