The soul trembles and shakes, when it loses its mooring and support.
Only the support of the True Lord brings honor and glory. Through it, one's works are never in vain.
thir naaraa-in thir guroo thir saachaa beechaar.
The Lord is eternal and forever stable; the Guru is stable, and contemplation upon the True Lord is stable.
sur nar naathah naath too niDhaaraa aaDhaar.
O Lord and Master of angels, men and Yogic masters, You are the support of the unsupported.
sarbay thaan thanantaree too daataa daataar.
In all places and interspaces, You are the Giver, the Great Giver.
jah daykhaa tah ayk too ant na paaraavaar.
Wherever I look, there I see You, Lord; You have no end or limitation.
thaan thanantar rav rahi-aa gur sabdee veechaar.
You are pervading and permeating the places and interspaces; reflecting upon the Word of the Guru's Shabad, You are found.
anmangi-aa daan dayvsee vadaa agam apaar. ||34||
You give gifts even when they are not asked for; You are great, inaccessible and infinite. ||34||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In plain words
A heart with no footing trembles and shakes.
Only the true One gives a life honor that never goes to waste.
Steady is the One, steady the Guru, steady the thinking on what is true.
Master of angels, people and yogi-masters, You are the support of those with no support.
In every place and every space between, You are the Giver of all giving.
Wherever I look, there You are — with no end and no edge.
You fill every place and every space between; thinking on the Guru's Word, we find You.
You give even what we never asked for — great, beyond reach, without limit.
The One is the only ground steady enough to stand a whole life on.
The deeper layer
Thir (steady, stable) repeats like a drumbeat — the One as the only firm ground; the trembling comes from having no footing. Jah daykhaa tah ayk too — "wherever I look, there You are" — a landmark of omnipresence. Anmangi-aa daan — gifts given even before we ask (grace). Nidhaaraa aadhaar — support of the supportless.
A Question to Sit With
What is steady enough in your life to lean your whole weight on?
