Sikhism·Dakhnee Onkaar·Shabad 111
Verse 38 of 55

Beloved, Beloved

naanaa karat na chhootee-ai vin gun jam pur jaahi.
Through various rituals, one does not find release. Without virtue, one is sent to the City of Death.
naa tis ayhu na oh hai avgun fir pachhutaahi.
One will not have this world or the next; committing sinful mistakes, one comes to regret and repent in the end.
He has neither spiritual wisdom or meditation; neither Dharmic faith mor meditation.
vin naavai nirbha-o kahaa ki-aa jaanaa abhimaan.
Without the Name, how can one be fearless? How can he understand egotistical pride?
thaak rahee kiv aprhaa haath nahee naa paar.
I am so tired - how can I get there? This ocean has no bottom or end.
naa saajan say rangulay kis peh karee pukaar.
I have no loving companions, whom I can ask for help.
naanak pari-o pari-o jay karee maylay maylanhaar.
O Nanak, crying out, "Beloved, Beloved", we are united with the Uniter.
jin vichhorhee so maylsee gur kai hayt apaar. ||37||
He who separated me, unites me again; my love for the Guru is infinite. ||37||

In plain words

Doing ritual after ritual doesn't set you free; without goodness, you go to the city of death.

You have neither this world nor the next; your faults leave you sorry in the end.

There is no wisdom, no quiet attention, no faith, no true focus.

Without the Naam, how can anyone be fearless? How can anyone see through their own pride?

I am so tired — how can I get there? This ocean has no bottom and no far shore.

I have no loving friends to call to for help.

Nanak says: if I cry out, "Beloved, Beloved," the Uniter joins me.

The One who separated me will join me again, through my endless love for the Guru.

Sometimes the whole prayer is just calling out Beloved — and being gathered up.
The deeper layer

Naanaa karat — many rituals — do not free; goodness and the Naam do. Jam pur, the city of death, is where a life empty of goodness ends up. The emotional peak: pari-o pari-o — simply calling "Beloved" reunites you with the maylanhaar, the Uniter. Jin vichhorhee so maylsee — the same One who separated you brings you back.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what do you call for when you feel most alone?
