Sikhism·Dakhnee Onkaar·Shabad 111
Verse 6 of 55

Nearer Than You Think

ayko ayk kahai sabh ko-ee ha-umai garab vi-aapai.
Everyone says that God is the One and only, but they are engrossed in egotism and pride.
antar baahar ayk pachhaanai i-o ghar mahal sinjaapai.
Realize that the One God is inside and outside; understand this, that the Mansion of His Presence is within the home of your heart.
God is near at hand; do not think that God is far away. The One Lord permeates the entire universe.
aykankaar avar nahee doojaa naanak ayk samaa-ee. ||5||
There in One Universal Creator Lord; there is no other at all. O Nanak, merge into the One Lord. ||5||

In plain words

Everyone says the One is the only One — and yet they stay wrapped up in ego and pride.

But look: the same One is inside you and outside you. The palace you're searching for is already within your own heart.

The One is near — never think it far. It fills the whole world, every corner.

There is only the One Creator, and no other at all. Nanak says: melt into the One.

The One you're looking for is near — already inside you and all around.
The deeper layer

Eko ek — everyone affirms the One with their words, yet lives in haumai, the ego. Prabh nayrhai har door na jaanhu — the One is near, not far. Ghar mahal sinjaapai — the Mansion of the Presence is recognized within the home of the heart. A landmark statement of immanence: the divine is not distant.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you usually look for what you most want — outside yourself, or in?
