The Mind Cannot Think Its Way There

sochai soch na hova-ee jay sochee lakh vaar.
By thinking, He cannot be reduced to thought, even by thinking hundreds of thousands of times.
By remaining silent, inner silence is not obtained, even by remaining lovingly absorbed deep within.
bhukhi-aa bhukh na utree jay bannaa puree-aa bhaar.
The hunger of the hungry is not appeased, even by piling up loads of worldly goods.
Hundreds of thousands of clever tricks, but not even one of them will go along with you in the end.
kiv sachi-aaraa ho-ee-ai kiv koorhai tutai paal.
So how can you become truthful? And how can the veil of illusion be torn away?
hukam rajaa-ee chalnaa naanak likhi-aa naal. ||1||
O Nanak, it is written that you shall obey the Hukam of His Command, and walk in the Way of His Will. ||1||

In plain words

Your mind can think forever and not find the answer. You can be perfectly quiet and still feel restless inside. You can have everything you want and still feel empty. No amount of cleverness or shortcuts help.

So what actually works? And how do we see through all the labels we wear — our age, our looks, our nationality, what we like and don't like — and find what's actually real underneath?

Walking in alignment with the flow of existence (Hukam) — like gravity, like the way rivers move toward the ocean. When you stop swimming against it and move with it, something shifts. The confusion clears. The truth that was always there becomes visible — not because you figured it out, but because you finally got out of your own way.

This isn't new information — it's already written into who you are.

You can't think your way to truth — but you can stop fighting reality, and let it show you.
The deeper layer

Pauri 1 opens Japji not with answers but by dismantling our usual strategies. Thinking harder. Being quieter. Getting more. Being smarter. Guru Nanak says — none of these work. This is radical. He is not telling you to pray more or do more rituals. He is saying your entire approach is the problem.

Hukam is the key word here. It is often translated as "God's will" — which sounds like a deity issuing commands. But a more alive reading: Hukam is the way existence actually operates. Like how water flows downhill — this isn't a rule imposed on water, it is simply water's nature. Hukam is the nature of everything. When you align with it, you are not obeying something outside you. You are finally being what you already are.

Notice what Guru Nanak does NOT say: he doesn't say think less, be more spiritual, or follow these rules. He says: walk in alignment with how things actually are. That's available to anyone, anywhere, at any moment.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of a time when you stopped trying to force something — and it worked out better than when you were forcing it? What did that feel like?
