Verse 22 of 72

With the One in You, the Wide Ocean Is Crossed

ਤਤਾ ਅਤਰ ਤਰਿਓ ਨਹ ਜਾਈ ॥
tataa atar tari-o nah jaa-ee.
TATTA: The impassable world-ocean cannot be crossed over;
ਤਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਮਹਿ ਰਹਿਓ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
tan taribhavan meh rahi-o samaa-ee.
the body remains embroiled in the three worlds.
ਜਉ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਤਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਵਾ ॥
ja-o taribhavan tan maahi samaavaa.
But when the Lord of the three worlds enters into the body,
ਤਉ ਤਤਹਿ ਤਤ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਵਾ ॥੨੨॥
ta-o tateh tat mili-aa sach paavaa. ||22||
then one's essence merges with the essence of reality, and the True Lord is attained. ||22||

In plain words

**T** — trying to cross the vast ocean of the world by yourself can feel impossible, like the far shore is out of reach.

As long as you feel tangled up in the whole wide world, the crossing seems too big. But then something shifts: when the One who fills all the worlds comes to live inside you, everything changes. Your own small essence meets the great essence of reality, and you touch what is truly Real. The impossible crossing simply... happens.

The world can feel like an ocean too wide to cross — but when the One lives in you, your essence meets the Real and the crossing happens.
The deeper layer

The letter Tatta (this one a harder “t” than the earlier Tatta). The atar / world-ocean (bhavsaagar) is the classic image of existence as a sea too wide to swim. Kabir says willpower alone can't cross it while tan tribhavan meh rahi-o samaa-ee — while you feel merged into the endless three-world tangle. The turn is one of grace-as-presence: jao tribhavan tan maahi samaavaa — when the Lord of the three worlds comes to dwell in the body — then tateh tat mili-aa — essence merges with Essence — and sach paavaa, the Real is found. Not crossing by effort, but being carried when the One enters. This is sach (the real, the lasting) as Gurbani uses it.

A Question to Sit With

When have you faced something that felt impossible alone but became possible with help you didn't expect?
