Verse 3 of 5

Everyone Grew Weary Trying to Describe It

ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਤਿਲੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
saachay naam kee til vadi-aa-ee.
Trying to describe even an iota of the Greatness of the True Name,
ਆਖਿ ਥਕੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
aakh thakay keemat nahee paa-ee.
people have grown weary, but they have not been able to evaluate it.
ਜੇ ਸਭਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੈ ਆਖਣ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
jay sabh mil kai aakhan paahi.
Even if everyone were to gather together and speak of Him,
ਵਡਾ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਾਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
vadaa na hovai ghaat na jaa-ay. ||2||
He would not become any greater or any lesser. ||2||

In plain words

People have tried and tried to describe even the smallest fraction of the greatness of the True Name. They have grown exhausted. They still cannot measure its value.

Even if everyone gathered together and said everything they knew — it would not make the oneness any bigger or smaller. It simply is what it is, unchanged by whether we can describe it or not.

The oneness doesn't grow larger when praised or smaller when forgotten — it simply is.
The deeper layer

The oneness is not made greater by praise or diminished by forgetting. It does not expand when everyone celebrates it or contract when everyone ignores it. This is a liberating teaching: your recognition does not create the oneness. Your forgetting does not erase it. It simply is.

The human tendency is to think our descriptions or devotions add something. They add something to us — they open us, reconnect us, make us more alive. But they change nothing about the source. The sun does not need to be praised to keep shining.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of something true and beautiful that exists completely independently of whether anyone recognizes it? How does that make you feel about it?
