Among All Things, There Is the Light

ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਹੈ ਸੋਇ ॥
sabh meh jot jot hai so-ay.
Amongst all is the Light-You are that Light.
ਤਿਸ ਦੈ ਚਾਨਣਿ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
tis dai chaanan sabh meh chaanan ho-ay.
By this Illumination, that Light is radiant within all.
ਗੁਰ ਸਾਖੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
gur saakhee jot pargat ho-ay.
Through the Guru's Teachings, the Light shines forth.
ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੁ ਆਰਤੀ ਹੋਇ ॥੩॥
jo tis bhaavai so aartee ho-ay. ||3||
That which is pleasing to Him is the lamp-lit worship service. ||3||

In plain words

Among all things, there is the Light. You are that Light.

By its light, all things shine.

Through the Guru's teaching, that Light shows.

What is pleasing to the oneness is the real ceremony of light.

The light is in everything — and once you can see it, there is no place it is not.
The deeper layer

This one says the same Light shines inside everyone, including you.

Sabh meh jot jot hai so-ay — in everyone there is a light, and that Light is You. The aartee started with the sky. Now it turns inward. The light is not only up there, and not only in the ceremony. It is in everything, and it is in you.

That is the path of the whole aartee. First look up at the sky. Then look inside and find the same light.

Gur saakhee jot pargat ho-ay — through the Guru's teaching, the Light shows itself. The Guru does not hand you a light you never had. The Guru helps you see the one already there.

It is like opening the curtains in the morning. The sun was shining all along. Now you can see it.

A Question to Sit With

Has there ever been a moment when you suddenly saw something as beautiful that you had always taken for granted — a tree, a person, a sound? What opened that seeing?
