Raag Aasaa
Commentary

Raag Aasaa, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

Pleasure and pain, fear and fearlessness, devotion and doubt all flicker moment by moment as the Lord's Play — and the one steady point amid the flux is His mercy, given in the company of the holy.

The Arc

The Pause (Pauri 0): pleasure and pain, detachment and ecstasy — the Lord's Play. Pauri 1: fearful then fearless, enjoying then departing — the flux of states. Pauri 2: even Yoga and worship give way to doubt; but in one moment, mercy blesses in the Sangat.

Key Vocabulary

  • the Lord's Play: the swings of experience as one staged drama (lila)
  • the flux of states: every condition flickering and passing
  • mercy the steady point: grace in the Sangat amid all the changing

Themes and Cross-Connections

The swings of experience as lila (the wondrous play) frame human restlessness; the one non-flickering thing is Gurprasad in the Sat Sangat. The flux that "cannot be a resting place" points toward the steady One.

For Raag Aasaa

Aasaa's hope amid the flux is mercy: states come and go, but grace in good company holds. The mood is observant and reassuring.
