Contempt Burns; Praise Blossoms

parmaysar kai du-aarai je ho-ay biteetai so naanak aakh sunaavai.
Nanak proclaims and announces what happens at the Door of the Transcendent Lord.
bhagat janaa ka-o sadaa anand hai har keertan gaa-ay bigsaavai. ||2||10||
The humble devotees of the Lord are forever in bliss; singing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises, they blossom forth. ||2||10||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Nanak tells what happens at the Door of the One.

The humble devotees are forever in bliss.

Singing the praises of the One, they blossom.

Contempt contracts and burns; praise expands and blossoms — you become what you practice.
The deeper layer

Hate burns, but praise makes you bloom.

Parmaysar kai du-aarai je ho-ay — Nanak tells us what happens at the door of the One.

Bhagat janaa ka-o sadaa anand hai — the humble lovers of the One are always joyful. Har keertan gaa-ay bigsaavai — singing keertan, songs of the One's praise, they bloom like flowers.

The shabad puts two ways of living side by side. The slanderer shrinks inside a fire of his own making. The one who praises opens up like a flower in the sun. We slowly become like the things we do every day.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference in how you feel after criticizing someone versus after appreciating something?
