Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 145
Verse 3 of 5

Talk With Everyone While Holding the One Close

ਮੁਖ ਕੀ ਬਾਤ ਸਗਲ ਸਿਉ ਕਰਤਾ ॥
mukh kee baat sagal si-o kartaa.
By word of mouth, I talk with everyone;
ਜੀਅ ਸੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਧਰਤਾ ॥੨॥
jee-a sang parabh apunaa Dhartaa. ||2||
but I keep God clasped to my heart. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

With my mouth I speak with all,

but I keep God pressed close to my heart.

You can talk with everyone while keeping the One held close in your heart.
The deeper layer

You can talk with everyone while holding the One close in your heart.

Mukh kee baat sagal si-o kartaa — with my mouth I talk with everyone. Jee-a sang prabh apunaa dhartaa — but I keep the One held close to my heart.

The two happen at the same time. Think of talking with friends while holding a warm cup of cocoa in both hands. You are fully in the chat, and you still feel the warmth the whole time. Outer talk and inner remembering are not at war. You can be fully present in speech while the heart never lets go of the One.

A Question to Sit With

What could you hold quietly in your heart even while busy with others?
