Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 146
Verse 4 of 5

Without the Deepest Taste, Fine Pleasures Go Flat

ਰੂਪ ਸੁੰਦਰੀਆ ਅਨਿਕ ਇਸਤਰੀਆ ॥
roop sundree-aa anik istaree-aa.
He may enjoy many women, of exquisite beauty;
ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਆਦ ਫਿਕਰੀਆ ॥੩॥
har ras bin sabh su-aad fikree-aa. ||3||
but without the sublime essence of the Lord, all tastes are tasteless. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

He may enjoy every kind of delight and beauty.

But without the deep taste of the One, every flavor is flat.

Without the deepest taste of all, even the finest pleasures go flat.
The deeper layer

This one says that without the One, even the best pleasures taste flat.

This is the heart of the shabad. har ras bin sabh su-aad fikree-aa — without Har Ras, the sweet taste of the One, every other taste is flat.

The verse pictures someone who can have every kind of delight and beauty. But it is not enough. The taste of the One is what gives everything else its flavor.

Think of food with no salt. It can look amazing, but it tastes like nothing. Without the One, nothing truly fills us (see also Shabad 118).

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed even great pleasures feel empty when something deeper is missing?
