The Soul Seeks Living Praise, Not a Monument

ਸੋ ਅਸਥਾਨੁ ਬਤਾਵਹੁ ਮੀਤਾ ॥
so asthaan bataavhu meetaa.
Show me that place, O friend,
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਨੀਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaa kai har har keertan neetaa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
where the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises are forever sung. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Show me that place, my friend,

where the praises of the One are sung forever.

What the soul really seeks is a place of living praise, not a monument.
The deeper layer

This is the pause line, the Rahao, the center of the shabad. It is the seeker's cry: "Show me that place, my friend."

What place? One where Kirtan, the singing of the One's praises, goes on forever. The soul is not asking for a shrine or a library. It wants a place where praise is alive.

Think of the difference between a photo of a campfire and a real one. The photo is nice to look at. Only the real fire keeps you warm. The soul wants the living fire. The rest of the shabad will answer where to find it.

A Question to Sit With

Where, for you, is praise and gratitude truly alive?
