Grief in One House, Song in Another: the World

ਕੋ ਮੂਆ ਕਾ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਗਾਵਨੁ ॥
ko moo-aa kaa kai ghar gaavan.
Someone has died, while there is singing in someone else's house.
ਕੋ ਰੋਵੈ ਕੋ ਹਸਿ ਹਸਿ ਪਾਵਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ko rovai ko has has paavan. ||1|| rahaa-o.
One mourns and bewails, while another laughs with glee. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In one house someone has died, while in another there is singing.

One person grieves and wails, while another laughs with delight.

At any hour, there is grief in one house and song in another — that is simply the world.
The deeper layer

The world is a place where sad and happy things happen side by side.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Ko moo-aa kaa kai ghar gaavan — in one house someone has died, and in another house there is singing. One person weeps. Another laughs. And it all happens at the same hour.

Think of a hospital. On one floor a family is saying goodbye. On another floor a baby has just been born, and everyone is cheering. That is simply how the world is. Joy and grief run next to each other, and neither one is the final word. A wise person sees the whole picture, not just their own little corner.

A Question to Sit With

Does it change anything to remember that someone, somewhere, is celebrating while another grieves?
