Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Kabir the weaver loved the One. Through that love, he became beloved and respected everywhere.
And the whole weight of his past was wiped clean.
This one says that loving the One lifted up Kabir, a simple weaver, and freed him from his past.
Ravi Daas, who wrote this shabad, now names fellow saints as living proof. He starts with Kabir, a weaver who made cloth for a living. Har kay naam kabeer ujaagar means "through the One's Name, Kabir shone out." He had no money and no high rank. Yet people have honored him for hundreds of years, only because of his love for the One.
Janam janam kay kaatay kaagar means "the papers of his many lives were torn up." Picture a long list of old mistakes on a notebook page, and then the whole page is torn out. Whatever Kabir carried from before was wiped clean.
So loving the One is more than a private comfort. It can make an ordinary life shine. And it gives a fresh start, so the past does not have to weigh you down.
What does it mean that loving the One 'wiped the slate clean' of the past?
