The Most Important Thing About You Is Unseen

ਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਕਹਾ ਸਮਾਏ ॥
tay bairaagee kahaa samaa-ay.
Where is that detached soul now contained?
ਤਿਸੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਤੁਹੀ ਦੁਹੇਰੀ ਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tis bin tuhee duhayree ree. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Without it, you are miserable. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Where is that hidden soul now held?

Without it, you are wretched.

The most important thing about you is the one thing you can't see.
The deeper layer

The most important part of you is the one part you cannot see.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It asks a big question. Tay bairaagee kahaa samaa-ay — where is that detached one living now? The bairaagee, the detached one, is the soul. It lives in the body but is not tied to it.

You cannot point to the soul. Yet it is everything. Tis bin tuhee duhayree ree — without it, you are miserable. Think of the WiFi in your home. You never see it, yet nothing loads without it.

A Question to Sit With

Where, do you think, is the 'you' that animates your body?
