We Come to the One Through Those Who Found Favor

ਸਾਈ ਸੁਹਾਗਣਿ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਈ ॥
saa-ee suhaagan jo parabh bhaa-ee.
She alone is the happy soul-bride, who is pleasing to God.
ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਉ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tis kai sang mila-o mayree maa-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
In her company, I may meet Him, O my mother. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

She alone is the happy bride who pleases God.

In her company, Mother, I may meet Him too.

We often come to the One through the company of those who have already found favor.
The deeper layer

This one says we come close to the One by staying close to people who already are.

This is the rahaa-o line, the "pause" line. It is the center of the whole song. It uses a picture from the Guru's time. The soul is a suhaagan, a happy bride. She alone is happy who pleases God.

Then the singer says to her mother: in her company, I may meet Him too.

Think of wanting to get good at a sport. The best way is to practice with players who already play well. Their skill rubs off on you. In the same way, the company of people who love the One is the doorway to the One.

A Question to Sit With

Whose example draws you closer to what is good and true?
