You Can't Raise an Army Against the Last Breath

ਨਿਰਭਉ ਹੋਇਓ ਭਇਆ ਨਿਹੰਗਾ ॥
nirbha-o ho-i-o bha-i-aa nihangaa.
Being fearless, he becomes unrestrained.
ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਆਇਓ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੰਗਾ ॥
cheet na aa-i-o kartaa sangaa.
He does not think of the Creator, who is ever with him.
ਲਸਕਰ ਜੋੜੇ ਕੀਆ ਸੰਬਾਹਾ ॥
laskar jorhay kee-aa sambaahaa.
He raises armies, and collects arms.
ਨਿਕਸਿਆ ਫੂਕ ਤ ਹੋਇ ਗਇਓ ਸੁਆਹਾ ॥੨॥
niksi-aa fook ta ho-ay ga-i-o su-aahaa. ||2||
But when the breath leaves him, he turns to ashes. ||2||

In plain words

Reckless and unrestrained, he never thinks of the Creator who is always with him.

He raises armies and stockpiles weapons —

but the moment his breath leaves, he turns to ashes.

You can build armies against every threat but the one that matters — the last breath.
The deeper layer

A proud ruler builds armies against every danger except the last breath.

Nirbha-o ho-i-o bha-i-aa nihangaa — he becomes fearless in the wrong way, with no limits on himself. Cheet na aa-i-o kartaa sangaa — he never thinks of the Creator, who is always with him.

So he gathers armies and piles up weapons, ready for every threat. But one thing he cannot fight. Niksi-aa fook ta ho-ay ga-i-o su-aahaa — when the breath goes out, he turns to ashes. Think of a goalkeeper who blocks every shot but forgets the game has a final whistle. No army can stand against the last breath.

A Question to Sit With

What can't any amount of power or security protect a person from?
