The World Is a Play; Keep Your Heart on the Star

ਕਹਿ ਰਵਿਦਾਸ ਬਾਜੀ ਜਗੁ ਭਾਈ ॥
kahi ravidaas baajee jag bhaa-ee.
Says Ravi Daas, the world is just a dramatic play, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਬਾਜੀਗਰ ਸਉ ਮੋੁਹਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਬਨਿ ਆਈ ॥੩॥੬॥
baajeegar sa-o mohi pareet ban aa-ee. ||3||6||
I have enshrined love for the Lord, the star of the show. ||3||6||

In plain words

Ravi Daas says: this whole world is a great play, a wonderful show.

I have given my heart to the One who is the real star of it all.

The whole world is a wonderful play — enjoy your part in it, but keep your heart on the One who is the real star of the show.
The deeper layer

Ravi Daas says the world is a big show, and he has given his heart to the One who runs it.

With this line Ravi Daas ends his hymns in this raag. Kahi ravidaas baajee jag bhaa-ee — Ravi Daas says, the world is a baajee, a play or a show, O brothers and sisters. People sometimes call this leela, the great play of the One.

All the ups and downs, all the puppet-dancing, are scenes in that show. Ravi Daas does not get lost inside the scenes, puffed up one day and crushed the next. Baajeegar sa-o mohi pareet ban aa-ee — he has come to love the baajeegar, the One who puts on the whole show, its real star.

Think of a school play. You can enjoy your part fully, and still know whose play it is. Because his heart rests on the star, Ravi Daas gets to enjoy the play. So play your part with joy, and keep your heart on the One who is the point of it all. Love the star, and the whole show becomes a joy.

A Question to Sit With

If life is a great play, what would it mean to enjoy your part while keeping your heart on the 'star of the show'?
