Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Everything turns painful the moment you forget the Master.

Here and hereafter, such a life comes to nothing.

Forgetting the One is the root of pain; remembering is the cure.
The deeper layer

When we forget the One, everything starts to hurt.

Sarab dookh jab bisrahi su-aamee — all is pain when you forget the Master. Eehaa oohaa kaam na paraanee — a life lived that way is of no use, here or in the next world.

So forgetting is the root of the pain. And the cure is not a new house or a better day. The cure is remembering. Think of a phone that has lost its signal. You can move it around the room all you like. It only works again once it reconnects.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how much heavier everything feels when you forget what holds you?
