It's a Happy Thing to Outgrow a Foolish Habit

ਭਲੀ ਸਰੀ ਮੁਈ ਮੇਰੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਬਰੀ ॥
bhalee saree mu-ee mayree pahilee baree.
It has turned out so well, that my first wife has died.
ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੀਵਉ ਮੇਰੀ ਅਬ ਕੀ ਧਰੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jug jug jeeva-o mayree ab kee Dharee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
May she, whom I have now married, live throughout the ages. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

What a relief that the old foolishness has finally gone!

And may this new wisdom stay with me always, for the rest of my days.

It's a happy thing to outgrow a foolish habit — and worth hoping the wiser way stays with you for good.
The deeper layer

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It is full of relief and hope.

Bhalee saree mu-ee mayree pahilee baree — it turned out so well that my first companion, foolishness, has died. Kabir is glad. Losing that old habit is not a loss. It is good news.

Jug jug jeeva-o mayree ab kee dharee — may the new one, wisdom, live on through the ages. May she stay with me forever.

Think of finally outgrowing a habit, like biting your nails. You feel happy it is gone, and you hope the new, better habit sticks. Growing and changing is a good and happy thing. It is worth wishing hard that the wiser ways stay for good.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a way you've grown or changed for the better that you're glad about?
