Verse 4 of 5

We Befriend What Abandons Us and Rage at Help

ਬੈਰੀ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਤਾ ਬਸਤੁ ਰਹੀ ਅਮਾਨਾ ॥
bairee kaaran paap kartaa basat rahee amaanaa.
For the sake of your enemy, you commit sins, while you neglect the reality of your faith.
ਛੋਡਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੀ ਸਾਜਨ ਸਿਉ ਬੈਰਾਨਾ ॥੩॥
chhod jaahi tin hee si-o sangee saajan si-o bairaanaa. ||3||
Your friendship is with those who abandon you, and you are angry with your friends. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

For the sake of your enemy, you commit wrongs, while you neglect the reality of your faith.

You befriend those who will abandon you, and you turn your anger on your true friends.

We so often befriend what abandons us and rage at what truly helps us.
The deeper layer

We often make friends with what will leave us, and get angry at what truly helps.

The verse paints a picture of mixed-up loyalties. We do wrong "for the sake of your enemy." The enemy here is the passions inside us, like greed and anger. We forget what is real. We stay close to those who will abandon us, and turn on our true friends.

Think of a team that follows the kid who cheats and ignores the coach who wants them to win. The soul can get its loyalties exactly backwards. It clings to what harms and pushes away what helps.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever had your loyalties backwards — clinging to the wrong things?
