Without the One True Name, everything appears as dust. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Renounce all your cleverness, and remember the Supreme, Formless One.

Without the One True Name, everything appears as dust.

Drop the cleverness and remember the Formless One — without it, everything is just dust.
The deeper layer

Two clean instructions: "renounce all your cleverness" (scheming gets you nowhere with the One, cf. Shabad 96), and "remember the Supreme, Formless Lord." And the measure: "without the One True Name, everything appears as dust." Apart from the Name, all the world's substance is just dust.

A Question to Sit With

What looks solid and important that might really be dust without something deeper?
