You Needn't Wait; Just Let the Restless Wants Settle

You can meet the Lord today, O Shaykh Fareed, if you restrain your bird-like desires which keep your mind in turmoil. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

You could meet the One even today, Fareed.

Just gently calm your restless, fluttering wants. They keep your mind all stirred up.

You don't have to wait years to be close to what's good — just let your restless, fluttering wants gently settle.
The deeper layer

You do not have to wait to be close to the One; let your restless wants settle, and you can meet the One today.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. It holds a hopeful promise: you can meet the One today. Not someday, not after a lifetime of effort, but now.

There is one condition. Calm the koonjarhee-aa in your mind, the bird-like wants that keep it churning. Fareed pictures our wants as fluttering birds that are never still. Think of a pond on a windy night. When the wind stops, the water goes still, and you can see the moon in it. The moon was there all along. In the same way, when the fluttering stops, the One, who was always right here, can be met today.

You do not need to wait for years or travel anywhere. You only need to let the grabbing wants grow quiet.

A Question to Sit With

What are the 'fluttering birds' of wanting that stir up your mind? What helps them settle?
