Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 240
Verse 2 of 4

Happiness Comes With Remembrance, Not Apart From It

ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਸਰਬ ਫਲ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਸੁਖੀਆ ਹੂਆ ॥੧॥
naam Dhi-aavai sarab fal paavai so jan sukhee-aa hoo-aa. ||1||
One who meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, obtains all rewards. That person becomes happy. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whoever keeps the Name in mind gets all the rewards.

That person becomes happy.

Happiness isn't chased separately — it comes with remembrance.
The deeper layer

Real happiness comes along with remembering the One.

Naam dhi-aavai sarab fal paavai — whoever keeps the Name in mind gets every reward. Naam means the Name, remembering the One. Sarab fal means all the fruits. So jan sukhee-aa hoo-aa — that person becomes happy.

This is the opposite of the forgetful person in the pause line. Happiness is not something to chase by itself. It comes with remembering, and the rest follows. Think of the sun and its warmth. Once you're standing in the sunshine, you don't have to go looking for the warmth.

A Question to Sit With

Have you found happiness arrives as a by-product, not a goal?
