Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Who can destroy the fortress of sin,

and release me from hope, thirst, deception, attachment, and doubt?

The grip of craving and doubt is a fortress you can't breach alone.
The deeper layer

The Pause asks the desperate question: who can "destroy the fortress of sin" and free the soul from "hope, thirst, deception, attachment and doubt"? These are pictured as a fortress — strong walls the soul cannot breach by itself. The question itself admits the need for help.

A Question to Sit With

What walls in you feel too strong to break down by yourself?
