All meditation, all hard practices, all clever tricks
leave one wandering in the wilderness, unable to find the Path.
Without understanding, one is not accepted. Without the Name, ashes are thrown upon one's head.
Guru Nanak gives a plain warning: practice without understanding leaves you lost.
Sabh jap sabh tap sabh chaturaa-ee — all jap, repeating holy words, all tap, hard self-denial, all clever tricks. On their own, they lead a person to wander in the wilderness, never finding the path. Bin boojhay ko thaa-ay na paa-ee — without understanding, no one finds their place.
Think of practicing piano for hours by pressing keys at random. You work very hard, but no song comes out. The effort only helps when you understand what you are playing.
That is Guru Nanak's point. Practice without inner understanding is lost effort. Cleverness alone does not get you there either. And without the Name, even the hardest worker ends up with ashes on their head, the old sign of shame.
