Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 261
Verse 8 of 9

We So Easily Forget the One Who Feeds Us

ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਅਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥
jis kaa an Dhan sahj na jaanaa.
He does not know the One who blesses him with nourishment and wealth.
ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਾ ॥
bharam bhulaanaa fir pachhutaanaa.
Deluded by doubt, he later regrets and repents.
ਗਲਿ ਫਾਹੀ ਬਉਰਾ ਬਉਰਾਨਾ ॥੭॥
gal faahee ba-uraa ba-uraanaa. ||7||
The noose of death is around the neck of that crazy madman. ||7||

In plain words

He does not know the One who blesses him with nourishment and wealth;

deluded by doubt, he later regrets. The noose of death is around the neck of that crazy madman.

We so easily forget the One who feeds and provides for us.
The deeper layer

It is easy to forget the One who feeds us, and that forgetting ends in regret.

Jis kaa an Dhan sahj na jaanaa — the foolish one does not know the One who gives food and wealth. Every meal and everything we own is a gift, yet the Giver is forgotten. Think of a kid who never notices who packs the lunch in their bag each day.

Then bharam bhulaanaa fir pachhutaanaa — lost in doubt, the person is sorry later, when it is too late. The verse ends with a hard picture: a noose around the neck of the one who never knew the Giver. It means the end catches the forgetful person unready. Another shabad in Raag Aasaa says the same thing: forgetting the One is the root of pain.

A Question to Sit With

How often do you remember the source of all you've been given?
