Serving the True Guru, you shall behold God with your eyes. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Meditate on the Lord, my friends and companions.

Serve the True Guru, and you will behold God with your own eyes.

Call your friends into remembering — the seeing follows the serving.
The deeper layer

This is the pause line, the center of the hymn, the line it keeps coming back to. It speaks to friends: remember the One together, and you will see God with your own eyes.

Raam japahu mayree sakhee sakhainee — "remember the One, my friends and companions." Remembering is not a lonely homework task. Friends call each other into it. That is the seed of Sangat, the gathered community.

Satgur sayv daykhhu parabh nainee — "serve the True Guru, and see God with your own eyes." This is a very concrete promise, and not only for great saints. Think of wiping fog off a car window. The view was there all along. When the fog of ego is wiped away, the world itself shows the face of the One. That is Aasaa's turn inward.

A Question to Sit With

Who are the friends you could share this remembering with?
