Verse 10 of 11

Grace Opens the Shop; Then All Deals in the Name

ਕਰਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਬੂਝੈ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
karam hovai satgur milai boojhai beechaaraa.
If the Lord shows His Mercy, one meets the True Guru; contemplating Him, one comes to understand.
ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਸੁਣੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਬਿਉਹਾਰਾ ॥੯॥
naam vakhaanai sunay naam naamay bi-uhaaraa. ||9||
Then, one chants the Naam, hears the Naam, and deals only in the Naam. ||9||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the Lord shows His Mercy, you meet the True Guru; contemplating His Word, understanding comes.

Then you chant the Name, you hear the Name, and you deal only in the Name.

Grace opens the shop; then speech, hearing, and trade all deal in one currency — the Name.
The deeper layer

The hymn's economy receives its final correction: even the true trade begins with a gift. Meeting the Guru is Mercy's doing, not the merchant's cleverness — grace opens the shop. And then the beautiful cadence of a life fully converted: chanting the Name, hearing the Name, dealing in the Name — speech, attention, and livelihood all trading in one currency. This is what the hymn has been driving at: not a person who added religion to their commerce, but one whose entire commerce, inner and outer, is remembrance.

A Question to Sit With

Which of the three comes easiest to you — saying the truth, hearing it, or living it — and which needs work?
