Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 27
Verse 3 of 5

Counting His Greatness Doesn't Make It Greater

ਸਾਚੇ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਤਿਲੁ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥ ਆਖਿ ਥਕੇ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
saachay naam kee til vadi-aa-ee. aakh thakay keemat nahee paa-ee.
People have grown weary of trying to appraise the greatness of the True Name, but they have not been able to appraise even an iota of it.
ਜੇ ਸਭਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੈ ਆਖਣ ਪਾਹਿ ॥
jay sabh mil kai aakhan paahi.
Even if they were all to meet together and recount them,
ਵਡਾ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਘਾਟਿ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
vadaa na hovai ghaat na jaa-ay. ||2||
You would not be made any greater or lesser. ||2||

In plain words

People have worn themselves out trying to size up how great the True Name is, and they have not managed even a speck of it.

Even if everyone in the world gathered to add up Your greatness, You would not become one bit bigger or one bit smaller. You simply are what You are.

Adding up the One's greatness doesn't make it greater — it simply is what it is.
The deeper layer

Nobody can measure how great the One is. And our measuring changes nothing about the One.

People have tried and tried to size up the True Name. They wore themselves out and did not reach even a speck of it. The shabad before this one made the same point with an ocean too big to cross.

Even if the whole world added up the One's greatness together, the One would be no bigger and no smaller. Vadaa na hovai ghaat na jaa-ay — not made greater, not made less.

So praise is not a deal. It is like praising the sunrise. The sun does not get brighter because you said "wow." But you are changed by stopping to look. Praise changes the one who praises.

A Question to Sit With

Why might it be freeing to know that the most important thing doesn't need your approval to be great?
