Sikhism·Raag Aasaa·Shabad 27
Verse 5 of 5

An Endless One Gives Endless Gifts

ਜੇਵਡੁ ਆਪਿ ਤੇਵਡ ਤੇਰੀ ਦਾਤਿ ॥
jayvad aap tayvad tayree daat.
As Great as You Yourself are, so Great are Your Gifts.
ਜਿਨਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਕੀਤੀ ਰਾਤਿ ॥
jin din kar kai keetee raat.
It is You who created day and night as well.
ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਹਿ ਤੇ ਕਮਜਾਤਿ ॥
khasam visaareh tay kamjaat.
Those who forget their Lord and Master are vile and despicable.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਾਝੁ ਸਨਾਤਿ ॥੪॥੨॥
naanak naavai baajh sanaat. ||4||2||
O Nanak, without the Name, people are wretched outcasts. ||4||2||

In plain words

However great You are, that is how great Your gifts are — they match You exactly.

You made the day and You made the night.

Those who forget the One have turned away from the best part of themselves; without the Name a person feels lost, with no home and no people. So I will not forget.

An endless One gives endless gifts; to forget it is to be homeless inside.
The deeper layer

The One's gifts are as big as the One. An endless Giver gives endlessly.

Jayvad aap tayvad tayree daat — as great as You are, so great are Your gifts. You made the day, and You made the night.

The closing lines are strong. They call those who forget the Master low and outcast. That word had real force in society. But the very next shabad does away with caste completely. So teachers explain these lines as an inner homelessness, not a social rank.

To forget the Name is like being far from home with no family around you. You are not lesser. You are just cut off from where you belong. Remembering is the way back.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between being alone and being truly at home in yourself?
