O Nanak, those who are imbued with the Lord's Lotus Feet, are content with the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||8||19||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Day and night he remains detached, serving the Primal One.

O Nanak, those imbued with the Lord's Lotus Feet are content in the Naam — the Name is enough.

Begin with beauty, end with enough — that is the whole journey told rightly.
The deeper layer

The last picture in this shabad is a steady heart that has enough.

"Ahinis rahai niraalmo" — day and night, such a person stays free inside. Not a visit on holidays: they live there. They are in the middle of the world, but the world does not own them. The Guru values this kind of freedom, lived at home with family and work, over running off to the forest.

Think of a lotus. It grows in a muddy pond, yet its petals stay clean.

The very last word is "santokhee-aa": content, having enough. Held close to the One's Lotus Feet, the heart wants nothing more. Not because wanting died. Because it arrived.

The shabad began with beauty and ends with enough. Those are the two ends of every love story that finishes well.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like, for one whole day, to have enough?
