Reflection on the Shabad is nectar — sweet Amrit.
Night and day, one savors it, with the ego subdued.
When His Mercy pours down, there is calm and easy bliss.
Dyed in the Name, one loves the True One forever.
After all the fires and fevers, this verse opens a jar of honey.
Amrit meethaa sabad veechaar — thinking deeply on the Word is sweet amrit, nectar. It is not bitter medicine you force down. It is a treat. An-din bhogay — night and day one enjoys it, savoring it like a feast. That happens once the ha-umai, the ego, the "me first" voice, stops pushing in front of the taste. Think of a food you once refused to try that is now your favorite.
Then comes a pattern Guru Amar Das loves. Mercy pours down, and sahj anand appears. Sahj means calm and easy, and anand means bliss. The last line brings the dye: naam ratay, dyed in the Name. It is a love whose color never fades.
Is there a practice you began as discipline that became a pleasure? What changed?
