Verse 4 of 9

The Gurmukh Doesn't Do Devotion; He Is Devotion

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਬੂਝੈ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
gurmukh naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai boojhai veechaaraa.
The Gurmukh meditates on the Naam; he achieves reflective meditation and understanding.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਲਾਹ ਹੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
gurmukh bhagat salaah hai antar sabad apaaraa. ||3||
The Gurmukh is the Lord's devotee, immersed in His Praises; the Infinite Word of the Shabad dwells within him. ||3||

In plain words

The Gurmukh remembers the Name, and understanding grows.

The Gurmukh's whole life is love and praise. The endless Word lives inside.

The Gurmukh does not do devotion — the Gurmukh is devotion, housing a shoreless Word.
The deeper layer

This one says the Gurmukh doesn't just do devotion; the Gurmukh is devotion.

Now the hymn turns from the Source to the person. What does a life facing the Guru look like from inside? Gurmukh naam Dhi-aa-ee-ai boojhai veechaaraa — the Gurmukh remembers the Name and comes to understand.

Praise is not a task on a schedule. Gurmukh bhagat salaah hai — the Gurmukh is devotion and praise. It is like a lamp. A lamp doesn't "do" light; it just shines.

And inside lives sabad apaaraa, the endless Word, a Word with no shore. A small heart holds a Word with no end. The small container doesn't shrink the Word. The Word quietly makes the heart bigger.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between doing kind things and being a kind person?
