The Finders Didn't Make Themselves; the Vault Was Inside

ਇਕ ਆਪੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੀਤਿਅਨੁ ਬੂਝਨਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
ik aapay gurmukh keeti-an boojhan veechaaraa.
He has sanctified those few Gurmukhs who understand Him, and reflect upon Him.
ਭਗਤਿ ਭੀ ਓਨਾ ਨੋ ਬਖਸੀਅਨੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥੬॥
bhagat bhee onaa no bakhsee-an antar bhandaaraa. ||6||
He grants devotional worship to them, and within them is the treasure. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

And some He has Himself made Gurmukh — turning them to understanding and reflection.

To them He has granted devotion also — and the treasure lies within them.

The ones who found the way did not make themselves finders — and the vault was inside them all along.
The deeper layer

Verse 5's necessary companion: the same Self that permitted the wandering makes the finders. Gurmukh-hood is not a self-appointed achievement — kee-ti-an, He made them so, granted (bakhsee-an — the forgiveness-word, the bestowal-word) the very devotion they offer back. And where is what they are given? Antar bhandaaraa — the storehouse is within them. He does not hand the treasure to them; He reveals that they are the vault. Election here is not favoritism explained; it is grace confessed by those who know they did not manufacture their own turning.

A Question to Sit With

Think of your best quality: how much of it did you actually create yourself?
