In plain words

Hear the Word, understand the Word, and keep your love resting on the True One.

Through the Word the ego is subdued — and in the True Mansion, there is peace.

Hear it, understand it, love it — the Word does cumulatively what willpower cannot do at all.
The deeper layer

Hear the Word, understand it, and love it; that is how the Word quiets the proud "me."

These steps are like beads on the same string Japji Sahib uses. Sabad sunee-ai — hear the Word. Sabad bujhee-ai — understand the Word. Sach rahai liv laa-ay — let your love rest on the True One.

Each step grows into the next. Hearing turns into understanding. Understanding turns into love. The Word works a little at a time. Heard once, it is just information. Understood, it becomes something you are sure of. Loved, it changes you.

Think of learning to ride a bike. First someone tells you how. Then you get it. Then one day you just ride. And what does it change? Sabday haumai maaree-ai — through the Word, haumai, the proud "me first" feeling, is quieted. Not by willpower, because willpower is the ego's own tool. The Word comes from beyond, and opens the heart from the inside. Then, in the True home of the One, there is peace.

A Question to Sit With

What truth have you heard many times that has not yet traveled from your ears to your life?
