The World Redistributes Pain; the Name Extracts It

Without the Name, peace is not obtained, and pain does not depart from within.
ਇਹੁ ਜਗੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪਿਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਇ ॥੪॥
ih jag maa-i-aa mohi vi-aapi-aa doojai bharam bhulaa-ay. ||4||
This world is engrossed in attachment to Maya; it has gone astray in duality and doubt. ||4||

In plain words

Without the Name, peace is not found — and the pain inside does not leave.

This world is sunk in attachment to Maya, led astray by doubt and the second love.

The world's remedies redistribute pain — only the Name extracts it from within.
The deeper layer

Without the Name, peace does not come, and pain does not leave from inside.

This verse states a two-sided rule, simply. Bin naavai — without the Name — no peace is found, and no pain is let go. The second part matters most. Naa dukh vichahu jaa-ay — the pain does not leave from within.

The world's fixes mostly move pain around. They distract us from it, numb it, or cover it up. But something stays underneath, because the world's toolbox never had the right tool for taking it out. Think of a splinter under a bandage. The bandage hides it, but the splinter is still there until someone gently takes it out.

The second line adds that the world cannot give advice on this. It is vi-aapi-aa, completely soaked, in maa-i-aa moh, attachment to Maya, the pull of the world. That very attachment is what causes the pain.

A Question to Sit With

When something hurts inside, what do you usually reach for — and does it remove the pain or just move it?
