The Restless Mind Isn't Bad; It's Homesick

ਮਨੁ ਪਰਦੇਸੀ ਆਇਆ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਸਾਧ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
man pardaysee aa-i-aa mili-o saaDh kai sang.
My stranger soul has come to join the Saadh Sangat.
ਜਿਸੁ ਵਖਰ ਕਉ ਚਾਹਤਾ ਸੋ ਪਾਇਓ ਨਾਮਹਿ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੨॥
jis vakhar ka-o chaahtaa so paa-i-o naameh rang. ||2||
That commodity, which I longed for, I have found in the Love of the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||

In plain words

My mind was like a traveler far from home, a stranger in a strange land. Then it found the good company it was looking for.

And the one treasure I had been searching for everywhere — I found it there, in loving the Name.

The restless mind isn't bad — it's homesick, and what it's shopping for is a love, not a thing.
The deeper layer

Man pardesee aa-i-aa — the mind as a pardesi, a foreigner, someone living far from where they belong. This is one of the raag's tenderest self-portraits: the restless mind is not bad, it is homesick, wandering because it has lost its country. What it has been shopping for in every wrong market — jis vakhar ka-o chaahtaa — it finds at last not as a thing but as a love: naameh rang, the joy of the Name. The seeking was real; it was just aimed outward. Turned toward good company, the same seeking finally lands.

A Question to Sit With

When have you finally found something you'd been looking for in all the wrong places?
