The One You Long For Lives Inside Every Heart

ਏਕੋ ਆਪਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੭॥
ayko aap varatdaa pi-aaray ghat ghat rahi-aa samaa-ay. ||7||
The One is Himself prevailing everywhere, O Beloved; He is pervading in each and every heart. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

That very same One, all alone, is at work everywhere — living inside every single heart there is.

The One you long for lives inside every heart there is — including the ones right next to you.
The deeper layer

This one says the same One lives inside every heart.

"Ayko aap varatdaa" — the One alone is at work. "Ghat ghat rahi-aa samaa-ay" — living in each and every heart. (Ghat means a heart, or a body.)

This is where the song opens widest. The earlier lines were close and personal: the One who knows me, feeds me, guides me. Now we learn it was never private. The very same One is inside every heart, everywhere.

Think of the sun shining in a thousand puddles after the rain. Each puddle holds the whole sun.

So the Beloved I have been longing for and the light inside the person next to me are the same One. Feeling apart was, in the end, not the whole truth. The One I missed was never really gone — never far from any heart, including mine.

A Question to Sit With

If the same light lives in everyone, how might that change the way you treat people?
