Verse 2 of 19

Some Learning Adds Load; Some Sets You Free

ਮਨ ਐਸਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਤੂੰ ਕੀ ਪੜਿਆ ॥
man aisaa laykhaa tooN kee parhi-aa.
O mortal, why have you studied such an account,
ਲੇਖਾ ਦੇਣਾ ਤੇਰੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਰਹਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
laykhaa daynaa tayrai sir rahi-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
which shall call you to answer for payment? ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Why fill your head with the kind of learning that only leaves you owing more?

Some knowledge just adds to the pile you have to answer for — so choose the kind that sets you free instead.

Some learning adds to your load; some sets you free — choose the kind that lightens you.
The deeper layer

The Pause (rahaau) sets the whole poem's challenge, and it's a surprising one for a poem about the alphabet: kiaa parh parh karahi beechaar — why study the kind of account that only calls you to pay up? The target isn't learning itself — this is a poem made of letters — but learning that puffs up the ego and piles up debt instead of freeing the heart. Some knowledge makes you heavier; some makes you lighter. The whole poem asks you to choose the second kind: the learning that dissolves the load rather than adding to it.

A Question to Sit With

What's the difference between learning that makes you proud and learning that makes you kind?
