kahai naanak jis karay kirpaa so har bhagtee chit laav-ay. ||1||
Says Nanak, that one, upon whom the Lord casts His Glance of Grace, links his consciousness to the worship of the Lord. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In plain words
Give your heart, dear friend, to loving the One — stay close to wise guidance, and you'll gather the truest wealth there is.
This path of love asks a lot, and few find it — but the door is always there, and grace quietly leads you to it.
The path of love asks a lot — but the door is always open, and you're gently led to it.
The deeper layer
This ten-verse Chhant is a long, loving talk with one's own mind — the poet coaxing his heart the whole way through. It opens with the invitation: give yourself to loving devotion, stay near the Guru, gather the wealth of the Name. It's honest that walking by your own stubborn will pulls you away, and that this path of love is difficult and rare — but it never makes the difficulty a locked gate. Grace, it says, leads you to the door. The hard road always has a way in.
