Verse 3 of 4

The Deepest Sweetness Is Usually Found Together

satsangat man bhaa-ee har rasan rasaa-ee vich sangat har ras ho-ay jee-o.
One whose mind is pleased with the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, savors the sublime essence of the Lord; in the Sangat, is this essence of the Lord.
har har aaraaDhi-aa gur sabad vigaasi-aa beejaa avar na ko-ay jee-o.
He meditates in adoration upon the Lord, Har, Har, and through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he blossoms forth. He plants no other seed.
There is no Nectar, other than the Lord's Ambrosial Nectar. One who drinks it in, knows the way.
Dhan Dhan guroo pooraa parabh paa-i-aa lag sangat naam pachhaanai.
Hail, hail to the Perfect Guru; through Him, God is found. Joining the Sangat, the Naam is understood.
I serve the Naam, and I meditate on the Naam. Without the Naam, there is no other at all.
satsangat man bhaa-ee har rasan rasaa-ee vich sangat har ras ho-ay jee-o. ||3||
One whose mind is pleased with the Sat Sangat, savors the sublime essence of the Lord; in the Sangat, is this essence of the Lord. ||3||

In plain words

Good company brings out the sweetest taste in life — the flavor of the One lives right there among people who love together.

There's no sweetness like it. Drink it in, and you'll know the way.

The deepest sweetness is usually found together — among good people drawing it out in each other.
The deeper layer

The verse praises the Sat Sangat — the good company of those who love the One together — as the place the sweetness (ras) is found: in the Sangat is this essence. The claim is strong: there is no Nectar other than the Lord's Nectar, and one who drinks it knows the way. For a child the teaching is simple and social: the deepest good is not usually found alone but among good people, drawing it out in one another. You become like your company, so keep company that tastes of kindness. That shared sweetness is itself the path.

A Question to Sit With

How do the people around you bring out your best — or your worst?
