Singing the Praises of the Lord, the treasure of virtue, all my pains are erased, and the knot of ego has been untied.
ਪ੍ਰਿਉ ਸਹਜ ਸੁਭਾਈ ਛੋਡਿ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਮਨਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਜੀਠਾ ॥
pari-o sahj subhaa-ee chhod na jaa-ee man laagaa rang majeethaa.
My Beloved shall not leave me to go anywhere - this is His natural way; my mind is imbued with the lasting color of the Lord's Love.
The Lotus Feet of the Lord have pierced Nanak's mind, and now, nothing else seems sweet to him. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In plain words
My heart is caught by the beautiful presence of the One. Nothing else tastes sweet to me now.
In good company I sing of the One, and I see that same One living in every heart. A sweetness rains down, and every ache washes away. The knot of pride comes untied.
My Beloved will never leave me; that is the Beloved's own way. My heart is dyed in love's lasting color.
The more you love the One, the more you see it living in every heart — and the tight knot of pride comes undone.
The deeper layer
This one is about a heart so caught by love that nothing else tastes as sweet.
The song opens with har charan kamal man bayDhi-aa — my mind is pierced by the One's lotus feet. "Lotus feet" is a loving way to speak of the One's presence. The heart is caught completely, like hearing a song you love and humming it all day. Kichh aan na meethaa — nothing else is sweet.
Love also opens the eyes. Har ghat ghatay deethaa — I see the One in each and every heart. The more you love the One, the more you see it in everyone. Then sweetness rains down and aches wash away. Ha-umai binsee gaathay — the knot of ego comes untied. Ego, ha-umai, is that tight "me, me" knot in the chest, loosening at last.
The verse ends on the Beloved's steady nature. The One will not leave, because that is simply the One's way. A love that stays is the love that unties the knot.
A Question to Sit With
When you love something deeply, do you start noticing it everywhere?
