Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Look closely — the world is like a shimmering mirage; nothing you can grab stays for long.
But the One is your constant companion, your true friend — closer and more lasting than anything money can buy.
The shabad closes with a clear-eyed image: the world is a mirage — like the shimmer of water on a hot road that vanishes as you approach — nothing here is permanent. Maya's pleasures shall not go with you. But this isn't sad, because of what does stay: the One is your companion, always with you — and then the beautiful, all-encompassing line: the One God is your friend, your youth, your wealth, your everything. Whatever you might chase in the mirage — companionship, vitality, riches — you already have, in the One that never fades. Stop chasing the shimmer; the real thing is already walking beside you.
What lasting thing do you already have that's better than the shiny things that don't last?
