A Discerning Heart Sees Through the Shiny Trick

The bell of the shameless queen, Maya, rings in both worlds.

In plain words

That trickster's bell rings out everywhere — the whole world dances to it.

But every now and then, a wise and discerning heart sees right through her and strips away her power.

A clear-seeing, discerning heart can see straight through the 'shiny' trick and refuse to be fooled.
The deeper layer

The Pause names Maya's reach — her bell rings in both worlds — the glittering pull is everywhere, and nearly everyone dances to its sound. But then the hopeful turn: some rare person of discriminating wisdom has cut off her nose. In the old idiom, 'cutting off the nose' means stripping someone of their power to shame or fool you — taking away their hold. So the meaning is bright: a person with bibek (discernment — the ability to tell the real from the fake) can see straight through the trickster and refuse to be fooled, and in doing so takes away all her power. You don't have to be dragged along by the glittering pull; a clear-seeing heart is free of it.

A Question to Sit With

How do you tell the difference between something truly good and something that's just shiny and tempting?
