Stay Close to the Good and the Foolers Can't Get Near

ਹਮਰੋ ਭਰਤਾ ਬਡੋ ਬਿਬੇਕੀ ਆਪੇ ਸੰਤੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
hamro bhartaa bado bibaykee aapay sant kahaavai.
My Husband is the Great One of discriminating wisdom; He alone is called a Saint.
ਓਹੁ ਹਮਾਰੈ ਮਾਥੈ ਕਾਇਮੁ ਅਉਰੁ ਹਮਰੈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥੩॥
oh hamaarai maathai kaa-im a-or hamrai nikat na aavai. ||3||
He stands by me, and no one else comes near me. ||3||

In plain words

The One I've given my heart to is wise and clear-seeing — truly good.

That One stands right beside me, so the trickster can't get anywhere near me.

Stay close to what's wise and good, and the things that would fool you simply can't get near.
The deeper layer

Now Kabir names his protection: my Husband is the Great One of discriminating wisdom — the One he's devoted to is clear-seeing wisdom itself, and that One is truly good (a real Saint). And with that One standing beside him, the deceiver cannot come near. This is the whole point of the allegory: you defeat the glittering pull not by fighting it alone with willpower, but by being close to wisdom and goodness. When your heart is companioned by what's clear-seeing and true, the tricks simply can't reach you — there's no opening. Stay close to what's wise and good, and you're safe from what would fool you.

A Question to Sit With

Who or what keeps you clear-headed and safe from being tricked or led astray?
