When the Noise Settles, You See the One Always There

ਬੁਝਿ ਗਈ ਅਗਨਿ ਨ ਨਿਕਸਿਓ ਧੂੰਆ ॥
bujh ga-ee agan na niksi-o DhooN-aa.
The fire has gone out, and no smoke is produced.
ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਏਕੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
rav rahi-aa ayk avar nahee doo-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The One Lord is pervading and permeating everywhere; there is no other second. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

The fire has died down; not even smoke is left rising.

And in the quiet, you see it clearly: the One is everywhere, filling everything — there's no other.

When the inner noise and smoke settle, you can finally see clearly the One that was there all along.
The deeper layer

This one says that when the noise settles, you can see the One who was always there.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line. It is the center of the shabad. bujh ga-ee agan na niksi-o Dhoo-aa — the fire has gone out, and no smoke is rising. rav rahi-aa ayk avar nahee doo-aa — the One fills everything, and there is no second.

The fire and smoke are the ego's heat and noise. The ego is the part of us that thinks only of "me." While it burns and smokes, you cannot see clearly. Think of a campfire at night. Once the smoke clears, you can see the stars that were there all along.

So the quiet is not a loss. It clears the smoke so you can finally see. Peace and clear seeing come together.

A Question to Sit With

What do you notice or understand better when things get quiet inside you?
