Verse 2 of 6

Look for the Holy Toward What's Alive

ਭੂਲੀ ਮਾਲਨੀ ਹੈ ਏਉ ॥
bhoolee maalnee hai ay-o.
In this, you are mistaken, O gardener.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜਾਗਤਾ ਹੈ ਦੇਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
satgur jaagtaa hai day-o. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The True Guru is the Living Lord. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

You've got it turned around, my friend.

The One you're looking for is living — the True Teacher is the Living Presence itself.

When you look for what's holy, look toward what's alive and present — not toward lifeless things.
The deeper layer

This one says: when you look for the holy, look toward what is alive.

This is the rahaa-o line, the "pause" line. It is the center of the whole song. Bhoolee maalnee hai ay-o — gardener, you have this mixed up. Satgur jaagtaa hai day-o — the True Guru is the Living Lord, wide awake.

Kabir is not scolding. He is gently waking someone up. The One is not a silent object you care for from the outside. The One is living, aware, and everywhere.

Think of the difference between a toy robot dog and a real puppy. You can polish the toy all day. But only the puppy is alive, and only the puppy loves you back. Many songs in this raag teach the same thing, like Guru Nanak's song of the inner sacred thread. The holy is not a thing in a place. It is the living reality in and around everything.

A Question to Sit With

What's the difference between something that just sits there and something that's truly alive?
