Treat Others as You'd Want: That Is Heaven

ਖਸਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਿ ਤਰਸ ਕਰਿ ਜੀਅ ਮਹਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਣੀ ਕਰਿ ਫੀਕੀ ॥
khasam pachhaan taras kar jee-a meh maar manee kar feekee.
Recognize Your Lord and Master, and fear Him within your heart; conquer your egotism, and make it worthless.
ਆਪੁ ਜਨਾਇ ਅਵਰ ਕਉ ਜਾਨੈ ਤਬ ਹੋਇ ਭਿਸਤ ਸਰੀਕੀ ॥੪॥
aap janaa-ay avar ka-o jaanai tab ho-ay bhisat sareekee. ||4||
As you see yourself, see others as well; only then will you become a partner in heaven. ||4||

In plain words

Know the One, hold reverent awe in your heart, and let your 'me-first' pride shrink to nothing.

And here's the key: treat others exactly as you'd want to be treated — then you're truly part of heaven.

Treat others exactly as you'd want to be treated — that, more than any ritual, is what makes you part of heaven.
The deeper layer

This verse holds one of the most important lines a child can ever learn — the golden rule, taught by Kabir five centuries ago: as you see yourself, see others as well; only then will you become a partner in heaven. Treat every other person exactly as you would want to be treated; recognize that they feel what you feel, want what you want, hurt as you hurt. Kabir ties it directly to conquering egotism — because the 'me-first' feeling is precisely what makes us treat ourselves as special and others as less. Shrink that pride, see others as yourself, and that — not any ritual — is what makes you part of heaven. Heaven isn't a place you earn with ceremonies; it's the state of a heart that treats everyone as itself.

A Question to Sit With

How would your day change if you treated every single person the way you'd want to be treated?
